From here to the dam, the sideslope is dissected by several W flowing coves separated by ridge spurs. In the coves, the community is TsCa/ RhMa on the E facing aspect, TSCA-QURU on the W aspects, QURU/RHMA. Some of the more SW spurs are drier w/ QUPR/KALA. The park boundary to the E follows a powerline cut. SW from our plot ca. 100 m is a large sandstone cliff w/ a thin patch of Pinus virginiana/Kalmia latifolia similar to GARI.44. Less reindeer lichen.;Mid-successional Tsuga canadensis - Quercus rubra forest. Lots of S1 hemlock, sparsely vegetated forest floor. A few clumps of hay scented fern. Little woody regeneration probably due to deer herbivory. Several deer trails meander through the plot. Dense canopy cover the forest feels cool even though it is 90 + degrees F.
Representativeness
Medium patch of Hemlock-Oak forest. This may be similar to GARI.51 but there is no Rhododendron, that is why we sampled here. Plot was also placed to contrast the aspect to our last plot GARI.55.
